What does a business analyst do?


A business analyst (BA) helps businesses to analyse and understand a business problem or opportunity. They undertake research and analysis to understand how a business or business area works, considering the people, organisation, processes, information, data, and technology. Their primary responsibility is to use data analytics to comprehend the current ways of working (the As-Is), spot potential for development, and create plans to maximize production and efficiency (the To-Be).
 
In an IT project, the business analyst is the primary liaison between the business stakeholders (the end users of the new platform) and the IT team (data architects, solution architects, developers, QA/testing team, etc.) who will create the new technology to meet the needs of the users. The BA needs to understand business needs, structure, processes, policies, and operations.

A good BA needs to have a blend of skills: technical know-how, attention to detail, business strategy, and the ability to get on with people at all levels in an organisation and gain their trust. ​​​

I have over 30 years of experience in industry delivering consultancy and business solutions, including roles as Senior Business Analyst, Business Editor, and Senior Project Manager.

  • 15 years working remotely with clients worldwide on contracts delivering business analysis, business comms, and digital transformation programmes

I have a BA degree in Business with French and German and an MSc in Operational Research (applied maths). I did post-grad research into knowledge acquisition for artificial intelligence (AI) systems. ​

 

As an experienced Senior Business Analyst, I work with key stakeholders and technology experts to re-engineer and enhance key business processes to ensure they align with strategic intent and support growth. I work remotely on global projects to deliver business solutions that leverage existing and emerging technologies. ​​​
